RESUMO

The present research had the objective to investigate the competitive intelligence activities that are contributing to the effectiveness of the strategic management of private education institutions, located in Curitiba city, state of Paraná. The work was composed by two phases, qualitative, and another, predominantly quantitative. The methodology that characterized the first phase was exploratory and descriptive study, for the second one, it was used the cross-section survey. The main statistical techniques used were: Descriptive analysis, Correlation of Spearman and Clusters Analysis. The data were obtained through the semi-structured interviews with 04 responsible managers for the strategic management of the searched organizations, as well as, through the questionnaire sent by e-mail to all private education institutions of Curitiba. Considering the 48 institutions that were included in the population studied, 45 of them answered the questionnaire. It was verified that how older are the institutions and huger is the number of their students, better will be their knowledge concerning to competitive intelligence, and there will be more frequency in the meetings to the discussion of strategic matters in these institutions. In this context, better structured will be the practices of competitive intelligence, as well as, the managers will have a positive perception regarding to practical results that I.C. provides or can provide to management. However, its possible to realize the need and wish from the interviewed managers in to promote opportune information about strategic subjects, aggregating and seeking knowledge, in the goal of a strategic management focusing the prospection, the gather and the control of new business in the private education area. Considering the limitations and the need for improvements in some aspects, this research contributes for future studies about the hole and importance of competitive intelligence practices in the strategic management of private education institutions.
