RESUMO

A tribological study of the potential materials to be employed in linear ultrasonic motors is presented. Different pairs of materiais such as steel/alumina, steel/diamond, alumina/diamond and diamond/diamond have been studied. The diamond samples were obtained by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and used in the ultrasonic pairs without any previous polishing. Using either alumina or diamond, the steel showed plastic deformation forming trenches with periodic features along them, which are of interest for motor autosynchronization or nanometric stepping. The steel/alumina pair showed problems of steel tribo-oxidation and of the generation of dust particles released to the atmosphere, probably fom the alumina debris. The steel/diamond pair presented the best results but due to the low lliction coefficient of diamond the tracking force was around 350 times less than for the steel/alumina pair. The diamond surface in the alumina/diamond pairs and diamond/diamond suffered intense polishing under ultrasonic vibration. The diamond polishing rate was higher is the alumina/diamond pair than in the diamond diamond pairo The morphologies of the surfaces were characterised by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy
