RESUMO

In spite of the increasing importance of time in human life, the problem of temporal perception has not yet received the same attention that neuropsychologists have dedicated to other cognitive functions. That temporal disorientation usually accompany Korsakoff s amnesia in cases of diencephalic and medial temporal lobe lesions is something we know since a century ago. In the last decades, however, researchers began to tackle the problem with better designed studies, coming to show the relevance of temporal-limbic structures for discrimination, coding and registration of time informations, as well as the critical role of frontal lobes on the temporal organization of behavior. With the purpose of achieving deeper knowledge on the psychological structure and cerebral organization of human time perception, the author has studied 92 brain-damaged patients and 111 healthy control subjects, matched by age, sex, handedness and educational leveI. The investigation was carried out at the Clinic Hospital of the university of Campinas (HC-UNICAMP, Department of Neurology, Medical School), from January 1988 through Mars 1992. The study was designed after Piaget s postulates on the cognitive construction of time concept, as well as after the ideas of Vygotsky, Leontiev and Luria about the mediated, semantic and systemic nature of higher psychological functions...Note: The complete abstract is available with the full electronic digital thesis or dissertations
