RESUMO

In this work, the water conservation is proposed as a way to improve the water use and the wastewater generation in the paperboard package industry. Therefore, the rational use and reuse of water are the conservation tools adopted. These tools were applied in a paperboard package plant, located in the Farroupilha city (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil), and had the objective to evaluate and validate the water conservation as a methodology for water and industrial wastewater management improvement. Here, the water consumption types and their water demands and effluent generation were identified and classified in a way to find the critical points to be worked in the paperboard package industry. Based on these informations, rational use and reuse interventions were planed and adopted, and their repercussions were evaluated employing predetermined indicators. These indicators represented the industry performance in terms of water conservation (quantity and quality) and legal issues. After conservative interventions, the average water consumption decreased 45%, the specific consumption was reduced from 213.11 milliliters of water per square meters of corrugated paperboard (mL.m-2) to 89.41 mL.m-2, the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was revitalized and the pollutants load emissions to the water body has decreased in a range of 90%, improving the observance of legal limits for wastewater emissions established on the factory¿s operational license. Thus, the water conservation demonstrated to be effective for the paperboard package industry¿s water and wastewater management.
