RESUMO

To analyze the process of building a knowledge of the body of children in the beginning grades of teaching was the main objective of the present investigation. The questions of the study tried to identify if this knowledge was related to the age of the child, if the children that experienced classes of physical education presented a better configuration of body knowledge, and also, if there existed differences in the configurations of body knowledge between boys and girls. The test of the Drawing of the Human figure was used as a gauging instrument of body knowledge of the children that participated in the study. Starting with the evolution expressed in the drawings, by the frequency of the occurrences of the body items and the qualitative traces, we had access to the body knowledge of different age ranges. The constructive process of this knowledge presented in the drawings made possible, even more, to relate them to pedagogical proposals for physical education in the beginning grades of instruction and pointed out the most viabel in the operations of the play-motor actions that stimulated and developed the aspects of body knowledge. The results pointed out that there is a signifcant difference in the configuration of body knowledge between the grades and that there doesn t exist significant differences in this knowledge between the children that participated in physical education classes and those that didn t experience these parctices in this discipline. They indicated, also, that there is no significant difference, in relation to the quantitative aspects, in the configurations of body knowledge between boys and girls, and, finally, that the drawing test of the human figure is an efficient method for diagnosing the knowledge that children have of their bodies, serving as an instrument of evaluation for physical education classes in the beginning grades of instruction
