RESUMO

The present study aims to understand the social identity of the Community Health Agent inserted in the Family Health Strategy (FHS) and the Community Health Agents Program (CHAP) in rural areas, considering the implications of cultural factors in the interaction with the community. The study was done with one FHS and two CHAS teams in the county of Diamantina, Minas Gerais. The research subjects were 15 community health agents, 3 nurses, 1 doctor, 3 auxiliary nurses and 11 adult (over 18 years old) users living in these teams areas. The study was approved by the Research Ethic Committee of the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais UFMG, and in-depth personal interview was adopted as the method to collect data, with a semi-structured script, applied by the researcher after signing by the interviewed of a Free and Clear Consent Term. Data and results were analyzed through Thematic Content Analyses technique. This analysis revealed that there is a strong connection between the agents values and culture and those of the community where he/she lives and works. Adding to this reality is the biomedical knowledge acquired in daily practice, their life stories and the performing of a function not yet vastly recognized and valued. Regarding the working routine of the CHA, we perceive the practice of educational actions aimed at preventive care and health promotion; the main target is the family and the instrument, house calls. The agents practices that were categorized in personal and professional levels reflect upon his/hers life. In general, the CHA image is taken as positive, which enables him/her to rise as an important actor playing an indispensable role in the present model of attention to basic health. The fact that the agent works in his/her community of residence is considered by most as nearness that favors relationship and the survey of local problems. Relationship with the agents is considered good both by the professionals and by the users.
