RESUMO

Young people are facing a rise in the risks related to sexual life, particularly unwanted pregnancy and AIDS. Educational strategies which take into account the characteristics of the target population are necessary to prevent these problems. The objective of this study was to learn about the sexual behavior, contraceptive use, and knowledge of AIDS transmission among students entering the university. 735 students responded to a structured questionnaire prepared for this study. The results showed that they have adequate information, but their behavior is incongruent with their leveI of knowledge. The theoretical framework of David Ausubel was used to analyze the results. The conclusion drawn was that in the study population, significant learning did not occur because although students had adequate information they did not use it. The challenge is to promote meaningful learning where information is both internalized and used. Educational programs should present sexuality in a comprehensive manner and as a positive element in an individual s life and personal development sexual education should be aimed not only at prevention, but at promotion of sexual health
