RESUMO

The current study aims at giving an initial diagnosis of working and health conditions of unionized teachers in elementary and secondary schools in Campinas. In this sense, the assignment is based on innovative and descriptive research. Its specific objectives are to learn about working conditions and main health problems of teachers, as well as identify health problems that may be associated with teaching as an occupation, taking into consideration the teacher s perception. Whenever possible, it was verified that the teachers that took part in the research expressed through their reports that they carry out teaching activities under diversified circumstances-according to the school where they work. When considering such diversity in terms of working conditions, the teachers in general point out poor working conditions and lack of suitable materials as being non-interpherent factors in the adequate development of their work. However, there are certain aspects related to the teaching process which are important, so that the teacher has both quality and work satisfaction. These aspects are associated with the structured career policy, criterias as well as transparent and democratic ways of evaluating the role of the teacher, autonomy to develop activities, greater participation in teaching policy projects of tile school, professional recognition and incentives to professional and intellectual development. As for health conditions it was verified that teachers have already had certain problems throughout their lives. Among them, the most common problems mentioned by teachers are voice strain, sore throat, backache, sore legs, allergic nasal congestion and sore arms. When evaluating the results referred to minor psychological problems, teachers often complain about their difficulty in dealing satisfactorily with their daily activities. Besides, they usually feel tense, nervous and worried. When observing the possible work related illnesses, symptoms or health problems mentioned by the teacher, we verified that voice strain, sore arms, sore throat, sore legs, backache, colitis, and RSI (repetitive strain injury), as being the most frequent problems attributed to work. In relation to minor psychological problems, the most frequent ones associated with work are difficulties in the job, work being considered painful and hard. Also, the teacher feels like a useless person thus losing interest in things and feeling tired all the time. We believe that the results obtained with this research may bring contributions to the widespread of a not well-known and complex routine of being a teacher and raise discussions that result in the development of actions that focus on the improvement of working and health conditions of teachers in private schools
