RESUMO

This work analysed in two experiments the learning and the retention of the learning of the relationship between key-pecking and food in pigeons who had suffered the ablation of the telencephalic structural (thalamic pigeons). There have been used nine adult pigeons (Columba livia) maintained at 80% of its ad libitum weight. The experiment I analysed the performance of three normal pigeons and three thalamic pigeons under schedules of continuos reinforcement for key pecking. The experiment II, analysed the key-peck rates in schedules of continuous reinforcement pre and post surgery, in order to determine the effects of the lesion in learning retention. Both experiments involved the manipulation of reinforcement magnitude (20 an 10s). The results sowed: (a) acquisition of the key-peck response in thalamic pigeons; (b) maintenance of the learned behavior, when returned to the experimental chamber; and (c) significantly higher response rates and greater variability for pigeons conditioned after surgery (experiment I), but not for pigeons conditioned before the surgery (experiment II). Results from both of the experiments suggest that if the telencephalic systems are not necessaty to the key-peck learning for positive reinforcement, they seen, nervertheless, to be important for the organization of the characteristic response patterns under this schedule...
