RESUMO

The period of life comprehended within adolescence deserves especial concern due to the increase in physical growing and development; there is a major demand for nutrients from the organism. Calcium is absolutely important to the muscular, skeletal and endocrine development. Iron is necessary to the building of muscular mass, area in which major blood volume is required. The nourishing habits acquired while one progressively achieves ones independence may strengthen or harm the healthy lifestyle for the rest of ones adult life, as the consequences resulting from the habit of drinking tereré, a cold blend using a mixture of erva-mate (Ilex paraguariensis) and water; this has become a highly accepted drink for relaxing times among teenagers. The aim of the study has been to analyzer influences amidst them the tereré consumption, in the serum concentrations of calcium and iron in adolescents from private high schools in Dourados town, considering the prevention of future deficiencies. Methods: descriptive study in which forty teenagers of both sexes and aged between 15 and 18 years-old have been evaluated. The following information has been obtained: nutritional consumption and laboratorial data. To evaluate the usual nutrients ingestion it has been used the questionnaire of quantitative nourishing frequency, and tereré has been added to the questionnaire. The serum concentration of calcium has been determined by measuring the solution concentration with EDTA and the serum concentration of iron by direct colorimetry. The associations have been examined by mono-diverse analyses (Spearman correlation) and by multiple linear regression, regarding the serum concentrations of calcium and iron as dependent variables. Results: The serum concentration of calcium has been associated with the following variables in the mono- diverse analysis: nourishing calcium (r- 0,34 P= 0,03) and nourishing phosphorus (r- 0,41 P= 0,01), in the serum concentration of iron association with sex. In the analysis of multiple linear regression the determining variables of the serum concentration of calcium have been: nourishing iron (B 0,39; P=0,02) and time of drinking tereré (B=0,51; P=0,03); the determining variables of the serum concentration of iron have been: nourishing phosphorous (B=0,30; P=0,04) and sex (B=0,57; P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: in this study it has been possible to remark that apart from the determining factors already acknowledged as intervening on the absorption of these nutrients, the habit of drinking tereré may also be influencing this absorption.
