RESUMO

The Information Technologies that western societies have been experimenting for the last few decades brought a profusion of digital machines and their operating systems. During this period, industry developed sophisticated and expensive proprietary application softwares for the full use of these machines, and took good part of the social market to the hands of few multinational companies, Microsoft among them. But the libertarian spirit of some members of scientific and hakers communities promoted the development of free and open software, that can be used as a ampler social good, and, mainly, evolve in optimum of the collaborative spirit. The present work studies the two models of software production, compares them aiming at the evidentes of qualities of each one, its costs and possibilities of adoption. It projects the possibility that courses of the Social Communication area could migrate to the free software model, given the qualities of this system, the radical reduction of costs and the conclusions that ample segments of communication production are adopting them. For this purpose, it compares the experiences applied with both systems in two courses of communication, in its qualification for audio and motion picture production.(AU)
