RESUMO
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the extemal compression ofthe lower limbs (CEM) on the treatment of patients presenting with intermittent claudication due to obstruction of the superficial femoral artery, and measured as maximal walking capacity on a motorized treadmill at four KmIh on a four percent incline. Two groups were studied of male patients, that presented with no statistical difference in relation to age, anldelbrachial index measured by the Doppler, and risk factors to atherosclerosis. There were 11 patients in the control group , and 15 patients were submitted to the new therapy. Five additional female patients received this treatment, and the results, are described but with no statistical ana1ysis. The hew method is based on the sequential pneumatic compression of the lower limb in a centrifugal direcrion, from the root of the thigh to the anlde, using a specially designed equipment. The results show that the control group did not present statistically significant improvement in the maximal walking distance on the treadmill (from 150 meters to 176 meters), while the treatment group presented a significant improvement (from 135 meters to 370 meters, p=0.0007). We conclude that the proposed method of treatment increases the claudication distance of patients treated, has no side-effects, being a non- invasive and an easy to use method
