RESUMO

This study has as its aim to defend the thesis that discourse genres can be used as a resource for teaching reading and that mother language lessons can be spaces where the interaction between pupils and the teacher and pupils among themselves can encourage the development of their linguistic capacities. We have then made efforts to develop a reading project with pupils of the last grade of the basic level at a state public school of São Paulo State, using the first page of a printed newspaper as an educational resource. For the elaboration of the education project, we appealed to Lev Vygotskys proposals on human development and learning and the importance of interactions in the construction of knowledge. Vygotskian assumptions were combined with Bakhtinian ideas concerning the social nature of language and of its dialogical constitution, a perspective that sees reading as a process of active understanding that produces a series of complex inter-relationships that enrich the already understood with new elements in the utterances dialogue. Data analysis showed that the first page of a printed newspaper worked out as an instrument for teaching-learning reading and we could notice that knowledge about genre brought to the fore new possibilities of reading, indicating new ways for the reflections that were created in the very act of understanding. These moments of interaction were the places that better demonstrated the reading act to be a process of active understanding where the words of the other be they a colleague or a teacher - constitute links in the chain of verbal enunciation whose relationships construct new senses that make possible broadening the pupils reading capacities by means of the reflection on and the integration of the verbal and pictorial materials
