RESUMO

The present study analyzed which therapist s behaviors, within the session, would establish a no punishment audience, facilitating the reduction of the suppressive effects of aversive events extra session on client s behaviors that had been punished.. To this aim, it was used the recording of ten initial and consecutive therapeutic sessions. The analysis of possible contingencies in operation was based upon the following features: 1) changes in accumulate rates of the therapist and client s words, 2) changes in the contents categories, and 3) client s responses rates and topography, which were classified as: spontaneous verbal responses about aversive contents; verbal responses about punished and/or susceptible to punishment behaviors; verbal responses about facing up aversive situations and verbal responses indicating escape and avoidance. The results showed that over the ten sessions, the rate o client s words increased as compared with the rate of the therapist words. The client also emitted spontaneous verbal responses about aversive contents, verbal responses about punished and /or susceptible to punishment behaviors, and verbal responses about facing up aversive situations. Such responses probably were facilitated by the therapist responses. The therapist verbal responses corresponded primarily to two kinds: 1) facilitative verbal responses (praises, incentives, signs of understanding, talking about pleasure matters.) contingent upon client s responses about reinforcing matters and, especially aversive contents; and 2) approaching responses to the client by successive approximations. These verbal responses of the therapist probably worked as reinforcing contingencies and also signalized absence of punishment over verbal reports about aversive and susceptible to punishment contents
