RESUMO

The present work was carried out with the central purpose of studying the reproductive behavior of Hyla minuta in the municipality of Campinas, state of São Paulo, Brazil (22º48 S, 47º05 W, 650-700 m alt.). The influence of some abiotic factors (temperature, wind, thunder, moon luminosity, sunset, rain and fire) affecting the reproductive activity of H. minuta was noted. More than 70 vocalization types were registered. These vocalizations are important in the specific recognition system of H. minuta. Calls were composed of three main note types which were named A, B and C. The A note was more important in attracting females and in close-range courtship; the B note had greater territorial function; the C note seemed related to attracting females during noisy choruses. During territorial interactions the vocalizations were more variable and usually ordered in an increasingly aggressive sequence indicative of a graded communication system. When the number lf males was maximum (between one and two hours after sunset) the males` vocal repertoire was the richest in call types. The males called from territories to attract females. Occupation of territories by individual males spanned from one night to more than a month. The territoriality only served reproductive functions (spacing of males for female attraction and to reduce mating interference). The territoriality was characterized by a sequence of more intensely aggressive behavior culminating in fight...
