RESUMO

This study presents the results of an experimental investigation of a set of 10 reinforced high performance concrete beams. The models were distributed in 5 series. Each series consisted of two beams with and without web reinforcement, except for one of the series, whose beams had only tension reinforcement. The primary design variable was the concrete compressive strength between 50 and 90 MPa. All the beams were designed to fail in shear, were simply supported and submitted to two concentrated vertical loads in symmetrical positions. These loads were gradually increased until failure of the specimens. All of the specimens, except for V90-1 which had a = 3,7 d , had this ratioa = 3,1 d . Despite of the increasing use of high performance concrete in Brazil, the NBR 6118-03 only regulates concretes with compressive strength under or equal to 50MPa. Regardless the great number of researches which central subject is the shear capacity of the concrete, there is considerable disagreement related to the mechanisms that governs this material in shear. This way, there is a need for more investigation on the behavior of concrete structures with compressive strengths above the limit considered by the Brazilian Code in order to get to know them better and optimize their use. The main goal of this project consisted in the investigation of the concrete s compression strength influence on the behavior of these beams. The examined influences were primarily concentrated on the: shear strength, concrete strain, ductility; rigidity; cracking patterns; failure modes; web reinforcement and crack openings. Based on the results achieved, one could conclude that the increase in the compression strength of the concrete influenced favorably the shear strength, the rigidity and the deformation of the concrete and unfavorably the crack opening and web reinforcement
