The feeding behavior of vampire bats on birds, caprines and swines under captivity conditions The behavior of vampire bats when feed on chickens, goats and pigs and the effects of bat predation on poultry were studied in two bat houses in Campinas and Botucatu, State of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. The bat house in Campinas had five flight cages (2 m high x 3 m wide x 3 m long), with a wooden structure and woven fencing wire walls, while in Botucatu there were three flight cages (2.5 m high x 3 m wide x 3 m long) with one brick wall and three wire fencing walls. In each flight cage there was a 15 w red lamp, three bird perches and a wooden box which served as day roosting site. Early in the evening, the bats left their shelters and flew to the night roosting places that were used before and after meals. Diaemus youngi constantly vocalizes prior to and upon leaving the day roost, unlike Desmodus rotundus and Diphylla ecaudata which are very silent. The mean time intervals during which bats used to stood next to individual birds were 25 minutes for D. Rotundus, 31 for D.
