RESUMO

In this study it was analyzed a social practice among women from São Gabriel/BA, which is called, in the native language, clientele and takes place after events occurred during biological reproduction. The movement involves solidarity and reciprocity of the relations besides establishing group cohesion and a feeling of belonging. Questioning the clientele propitiated an understanding that the creation of social bonds of these women has, as fundamental bases, a symbolic importance of the after birth period. Our study is supported by genre relations as an interpretative theoretic perspective and by the socio-anthropologic tradition. We chose to reflect about gift for understanding that this net is consolidated with material and symbolic exchanges. The discussion on social class is justified since this net consists of agricultural workers, who live in the semi-arid area of Bahia state. To guarantee the social reproduction of the group they had to come up with survival strategies because their incomes are very low. This research demonstrates that the practice of the clientele still remains in time and space with some transformations, such as, the reduction of the number of young women willing to enter the net. It is also important to emphasize that the dynamics of the families who practice it, as well as their economic conditions have undergone major changes during the last decades. However, the meanings of the clientele continue the same. The study of this practice made it possible to extend the understanding of how those women share the responsibilities of maternity. The clientele "habitus" and the common feeling among these women have been able to maintain the group cohesion and the consequent exchanges point to other directions than contractual interests and legal obligations.
