RESUMO

The work studies the architecture’s chronics in southern newspapers in the early 1930s. Using as the main source the journalistic material, the articles and chronics which were published in the two main newspapers from Porto Alegre at that time: Correio do Povo and Diário de Notícias, it presents, initially, an urban transformations’ panorama of the city during the 1920s and 1930s, as well as the emergence of the first discussions about modern architecture, trying to place the environment where two architecture specialized columns appeared. Each one of them published in one of the newspapers, Miranda Netto’s and João Antonio Monteiro Neto’s columns would be a privileged space in order to publicize and discuss in Porto Alegre important themes about brazilian architectonic context in the first decades of XX century, such as professional role, social hausing, modern architecture and the new trends that brazilian architecture would take.
