RESUMO

Quartzite is a kind of rock that after a simple process becomes a product of great economic value due to its esthetic characteristics as well as its physical and mechanical applications serving primarily as a tile covering for interior and external walls. The region surrounding Ouro Preto has many companies which utilize quartzite for this purpose. The majority of them are located along the Inconfidentes Road between Ouro Preto and its neighboring city, Mariana, both located in Minas Gerais. The processing of quartzite utilizes techniques such as sawing, rough-hewing and polishing the rock. This process generates a residue and consumes much water necessary for cooling the rock and machinery and to control airborne dust. This research focused on analyzing the historical and socio-economic aspects, the environmental impact, especially in relation to the volume of residual waste material generated from sawing, and the volume of finished product and amount of water needed for cooling. The methodology used was based on the size of the operation, historical research and interviews with the companys owners, supervisors and employees. The results of this research showed that this industry still generated few jobs but has great and promising potential. The consumption of water required is 320 liters per square meter of rock saw dust residue.This residue represents on average 45% of the area worked with 80% of this being profitable in terms of area sawed. The water used in the process of sawing the quartzite has on average a total concentration per liter of 24.2 grams of solids with 98.5% held in suspension.
