RESUMO

The aim of this work was to assess the presence of toxic chemicals in the wastewater from university laboratories, which would be improperly discharged into sinks together whit waste from bathrooms and canteens of the campus buildings of UFOP (Federal University in Ouro Preto, Brazil). This work also aimed at determining the aerobic and anaerobic biodegradability of the wastewater, as well as at assessing the performance of a lab scale UASB reactor in treating wich wastewater. The quantitative analysis of the final wastewater presented typical concentrations of domestic wastewater, with medium values of BOD and COD of 280 mg/L and 670 mg/L, respectively. The metals detected in the waste were all within the discharge limit regulated by the Minas Gerais state legislation. The aerobic and anaerobic biodegradability tests revealed that 50% and 95% oh the wastewater was liable to aerobic and anaerobic degradation, respectively. Despite the low biodegradability observed in the anaerobic test, the removal efficiencies of COD and retention of suspended solid in the UASB reactor were somewhat higher and averaged 76% and 93%, respectively.
