RESUMO

- In the last few decades, the city of São José dos Campos presented a great commercial, industrial and urban development, being considered currently, as one of the great cities of São Paulo State. With a fleet to propagate around 200 thousand light vehicles. With development, the city faces problems of atmospheric pollution. As the surface ozone is considered the main responsible pollutant for the low quality of air, the objective of this work was to carry a study of the characterization of surface ozone and to correlate with meteorological parameters: irradiance, temperature, humidity, precipitation and wind. So measurements in three places in the city, called INPE (23°12,4 S; 45°51,6 W), UNIVAP (23°12,5 S; 45°57,2 W) and CETESB (23°11,3 S; 45°52,3 W), during the year of 2007 were analyzed. In the seasonal variation, the surface ozone presented similar characteristic to the temperature and the irradiance, with higher averages in the periods of spring and beginning of autumn and lower in the period of winter. In the diurnal patterns, the surface ozone also presented similar behavior to the temperature and irradiance and an opposing to humidity. A weekend ozone effect was evidenced in all the places of measurements in the year of 2007, with the maxima daily averages on Saturdays and Sundays being bigger than maxima averages on weekdays. This effect was not detected in the years from 2001 to 2006, in study carried with surface ozone in the CETESB point. This occurrence suggests that changing in the emissions patterns between nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons may have influenced the production/destruction rate of surface ozone in São José dos Campos in the year of 2007, differently from early years.
