RESUMO

In 1947, Willis Winslow studied some suspensions made of silica gel in mineral oil. He observed that they had an enhancement in shear when submitted to an electric field of about 4 kV/mm. Many companies recognized the scientific value of the discovery with an application in torque transmisssion and damping systems in mind. However, because of the abrasive nature of the existing ER fluids, the efforts were frustrated and these studies were postponed. Only in 1967 the topie ressurged in Great-Britain. Sinee then, electro-rheological fluids (ERF) have been studied as if they were extremely viscous liquids. In this work, however, they were characterized as solids and two different electrorheological fluids were studied: one of them was made of starch in silicone fluid and the other one was composed of carboxymethilcelulose (CMC) in silicone fluid.Their mechanical properties were determined by mechanical testing (tensile, compression, fatigue and shear) and their rheological properties were obtained by steady shear tests in a couette rheometer. The concentration of the samples ranged from 10 to 40 w%; the silicone fluid viseosities were 100, 500 and 1000 cSt and the electric field varied from 0 to 4 kV/mm. The mechanical testings were carried out at room temperature and steady shear tests temperature ranged from 10 to 50°C. Given the results it can be concluded that fluids made of CMC have a better performance than those made of starch, and also that ER materiaIs are more resistent to compression, tensiIe and shear, in this order. More precisely, fluids made of CMC had elasticity modulus in the same order of that of rubber, they had tensile strength 600 to 104 times as lesser as that of polyethilene, static yield stress 104 times as lesser as that of ABS and fatigue life of the same order of some polymers like polyethilene and polypropilene. Also, just for an illustration of a mechanical device, an ER clutch was built and its torque was determined.
