RESUMO

The aim of the present work was to describe and compare the anatomy and the morphology of three chemotypes of Ocimum gratissimum as eugenol geraniol and thymol ando to offer information to improve the knowledge of the genus Ocimum. Plants were collected in the gardens of the Embrapa-Tecnological Exhibition in Brasília- Brazil. The collection of Ocimum gratissimum have 12 clones of each chemotype. We picked samples randomly from only three accesses. For morphologic and anatomical analysis leaves were collected as a pattern from the thirty knot. The chemotypes showed morphological and anatomical differences mainly in the petiole and in the leaf sheet. The petioles and leaves from chemotypes eugenol and thymol were more similar one to each other than geraniol type for petioles and leaves. In the geraniol type leaves were more developed and presented more simple trichomes when compared to the others. The chemotypes geraniol and thymol presented rare concavities compared to the eugenol type where the concavities were abundant. In general the chemotypes studied presented the same reaction to the reagents tested exception to iron chloride III which reacted positive only in eugenol-type petiole.
