RESUMO

Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic mycosis that frequently involves the buccal mucosa, causing granular, eritematous and ulcerated lesions, called mulberry-like (framboesiform). Although the microscopic features of paracoccidioidomycosis are well-known, there are no detailed descriptions and quantitative evolution in the histological characteristics of the oral lesions. The aim of this work was to describe, quantify and correlate the main microscopic aspects of 64 biopsies of the oral mucosa. Paraffin sections were stained with H/E, P.A.S. and Gomor Grocott. The folowing parameters were analysed: mononuclear chronic inflammation, microabscess, granuloma, giant cells, Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, eosinophil and pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia. In most cases there was a mononuclear infiltrate predominance, with variable amounts of the other parameters considered. The fungic particles, with multiple or without budding, were observed mainly in the giant cells, in or out of the granulomas. The quantitative data, indicated that there was no correlation among the various parameters analysed, except between the quantity of fungi with and without budding. The same material used in this work is now being studied with the help of an image analysing system and by imunocytochemistry technics to confirm or not the results here described
