RESUMO

Some experiments were carried out to study the performance of many different tool materials, like pure ceramic (AI203+Zr02), mixed ceramic (A1203+TiC) , SIALON (A1203+SbN4) , whiskers reinforced ceramic (AI203+sic) , cemented carbide ISO K10, cubic boron nitride (CBN), o and diamond (PCD). They were tested in turning of carbon and glass fiber reinforced fenolic resin composite. Two different workpiece shapes were used, laminated plate and filament wound tube. During the experiments, tool wear, surface roughness, and machining forces behaviour were observed, under several cutting lengths (or cutting times), cutting speeds, and fiber directions in the composite. The experimental results showed that, due to the great influence of tool wear in workpiece surface roughness, only diamond tools are technically suitable to be used in finish turning. In rough turning, the cemented carbide tools proved to be the best solution. Al though, it presented larger wear than diamond, the relationship cost and benefit showed to be much lower and, besides, it is not necessary special operational care
