RESUMO

This work was done to characterize, under the clinical point of view, the statistical population of the patients with breast diseases in care at the Campo Grande University Hospital, MS, Brazil. At the same time, an online simplified opinion survey about the psychosocial impact of the breast cancer was applied to the public. Methods. From all the cases of breast diseases in care at the Campo Grande University Hospital from July 1995 to June1998 (N= 871), a systematic sample (N= 134) was selected, aiming to characterize the clinical profile. After that, an online questionnaire (QOM) was elaborated to collect the opinions of the public about breast cancer, aiming to identify its psychosocial impact. Results. Women aged 51- 70 present the greater prevalence (53.7%) of breast disease. The malignant disease most frequently found in the systematic sample was the ductal carcinoma (45.5%). The diagnostic methods often used, beyond the clinical examination (100.0%), were: mammography (91.1%), breast sonography (66.6%), osseous scintillation scanning (37.2%), needle biopsy (91.1%) and the surgical specimens biopsy (89.2%). The radical mastectomy was the surgical treatment for the breast cancer most frequently used (89.7%), being less usual the quadrantectomy and the conservatory treatment. The adjuvant treatment most commonly used was the radiotherapy associated with the chemotherapy (86.7%). The physiotherapy and the psychological treatment, especially the psychotherapy do not appear at any circumstance. The responses given to the Questionnaire were 517 (F=465; M=52), predominantly of High level school people (259) and university level people (174), aged 31-40 and older than 51, being 176 with breast disease. After being noticed the cancer diagnostic the main emotional reaction about breast cancer was depression 47,2%), but there was also the reaction of escape (26,1%) and revolt(14,8%). The most frequent adjuvant therapy was the chemotherapy (77,8%). The radiotherapy (63,6%), the physiotherapy (71,3%) and the psychotherapy (40,9%) were usual too. The majority of the respondents was regular in the therapies (92,6%), and they declared themselves satisfied with the explanations received about the meaning of the disease (78,9%). Conclusions. The Oncology Department of the UFMS/MS University Hospital owns standards of care toward the people from the State of Mato Grosso do Sul adjusted with the needs of the breast cancer patients. The public who answered the systematic survey shows a generalized interest about the subject. The results suggest the urgency of incisive spreading about the breast self-survey and a most effective effort from the field of the adjuvant psychotherapy.
