RESUMO

This paper presents a comprehensive and updated view of technologies used in anaerobic digestion (AD) for solid waste treatment. A review of literature and a theoretical analysis of relevant information are carried out for this purpose. The evolution of discussions about environmental issues, the work developed by The United Nations, the Earths climatic system, the Greenhouse Effect, the global heating and climatic changes are considered. The waste problem is placed under this context and a brief theoretical review of Anaerobic digestion and its technological evolution are presented. Several systems and technologies of Anaerobic digesters used in the processing of the urban solid residues, in pilot plants or in commercial facilities, are described and compared. R&D groups, related institutions and companies, programs and initiatives for promotion as well as tendencies are identified. In recent years the intensification of the use of the AD is verified in the urban solid residues treatment in Europe, with new and larger facilities. But in Brazil groups and initiatives are a few and barely visible. This work suggests that IPT should develop an initiative: the formation of a group aiming the development of technological expertise in anaerobic digestion of urban solid residues, promoting the necessary initiatives and partnerships.
