RESUMO

Research literature have showed a strong association between physical and subjective wellbeing, gender, age, and regular physical activity. This study was aimed at describing and analysing relationships between gender, physical activity, perceived health, and physical wellbeing among young adults and aged people. Subject were 200 voluntary, set in two groups containing 100 individuals each, matched by age (20 to 35 and 60 to 70), gender, and regular and not regular enrollment in physical aerobian activities. Instruments included: a 21 items questionnaire addressed to sociodemographic and occupational characterization, kind and timing of physical activity, and reported illnesses; a questionnaire on musculoskeletal discomforts during last year and last week, and a scale to the assessment of physical and mental health in comparison with those existing five years ago, and in comparison with others of the same age. Data were submitted to descriptive statistics and tests of contrasts (Goodman), hypothesis, (Mann-Whitney), and correlation (Spearman). Results were: 1) In all groups, but mostly among women, there were higher rates of musculoskeletal than others kinds of illnesses. 2) Aged women reported the highest rates of musculoskeletal illnesses, but male and female olds showed the highest rates of coronarian disease. 3) Independently of age and enrollment in regular physical activity, physically inactive women and aged people showed the greatest rates of diseases. 4) The aged, female and sedentary subjects reported more discomforts during last year and last week. 5) Among women, inactive and old subjects, perceived health was worse. 6) In all groups there were observed negative correlations between reported diseases, discomforts and perceived health. Subjective assessment of health are important mediators of quality of life, which is affected by regular practice of physical activities. Improving this practice means promoting successful development and successful aging.
