RESUMO

The Lippia alba specie, Verbenaceae, has chemotypes with different activities. Cytogenetics studies have been done between these chemotypes and different numbers has been account for these plants. However, little information about heterochromatin organization is available about this specie. The aim of this study, was characterize 5 accesses of Lippia alba with 2n= 30 chromosomes, by chromosome banding. Metaphases were obtained from root tips and submitted to DAPI, CMA3, AgNOR and C banding. Accesses showed 10 median and 5 sub-median chromosomes (1- 10 and 11-15 pairs respectively). Pairs 2, 5 and 11 showed satellites and their constrictions were CMA3+. On the other hand, only 2 pairs were positive for AgNOR (pairs 5 and 11). The maximum of 4 nucleolus was observed in interphases and the only two bivalents associated with the nucleolus in diakinesis denote only two pairs of NORs with activity in Lippia alba. This specie showed C and DAPI coincident bands in telomers and centromers of all chromosomes (these were coincident in the sites). No polymorphisms were observed C bands, although, any bands have been lost due to the chromosome degradation in C banding method. In addition it was observe that the chromosome number was not associated to chemical composition of essencial oil and may be a consequence of a genetic mechanism control.
