RESUMO

The aim of the present study was the evaluation of chemical composition of shallow groundwater in the vicinity of the artificial lake of the Peixe Angical Hydroelectric Plant, situated in the south region of the Tocantins State, Brazil. The analysis focused on possible modification of water composition due to the elevation of the water table; possible modification on the physical-chemical characteristics due to climatic seasonality, and the groundwater quality as potable source for public supply. 32 monitoring wells were selected in the urban areas of Paranã, São Salvador do Tocantins and Vila do Retiro towns. Four sampling campaigns were carried on in different periods on wet and dry seasons, before and after the lake formation. The results of the chemical analyses show that the majority of the waters are classified as calcic bicarbonated in all sampling. High anomalous concentration of nitrate and ammonium, as well as chloride and sodium in many points indicate human interferences responsible for the modification of the natural water composition, despite of the artificial lake development. Compositional modifications due to the climatic seasonality are not persistent to all elements and substances analyzed, but are particularly evident to the sodium, potassium and calcium. The rising of the water table did result in important water composition modification. However, to evaluate specific modification patterns in each parameter, it is necessary the continuity of the investigations and monitoring, as well as the redirection of the research, considering the hydrogeologic characteristics of each monitoring well. It is important to remark that the low level of sanitation and deficiencies of water supply systems in the region represent the main polluting agents.
