RESUMO

Functional alterations and psychological status influence in the oral health and the use of removable prostheses in elderly patients. The self-perception of oral health influences in the search for oral cares and the quality of life of the aged population. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of removable prostheses, total or partial, and its relation to the quality of life in institutionalized elderly from Piracicaba-SP, Brazil. The sample was constituted for 40 subjects, both gender, mean age of 75 years old, functionally independent or partially dependent, without significant cognitive alterations. A questionnaire with questions about the sociodemographic and systemic health characteristics was applied. The quality of life was assessed using the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) and the Geriatric Depression Scale. Removable prosthesis quality was assessed using the Nevalainen index. The data were analyzed using Chi-Square test, Mann-Whitney test and Kruskal-Wallis test (a=0.05). No significant statistics differences were found in the socioeconomic variables. In relation to the use of removable prostheses, 62.5% used prostheses in both arcades; 20% in only upper arcade, and 17.5% used no prostheses. Of total sample, 62.5% showed depression. No significant statistics differences were found between the GOHAI averages related to the occlusion, articulation, and vertical dimension of the prostheses. However, stabilization and retention of the prostheses influenced these averages. The conclusion is that the quality of life and oral health self-perception in the elderly may be influenced by the quality of removable prostheses used
