RESUMO

The aim of this study "in vitro" was to compare two method of surface roughness analyse, perfilometer and spectrophotometer, on the surface one conventional glass ionomer cement and two glass ionomer/composite resin hybrid materials, submitted to different surface finishing treatments (Soflex discs, 12 and 30-biaded carbide burs and poliéster matrix band). To perfilolometric analysis, one hundred eighty specimens were randomly made and separated into nine experimental groups (twenty samples of each). The same specimens were to made use of spectrophotometer analysis, however, each group were separated into half, then nine groups (ten samples of each) to submitted to staining in Fucsin at 0,5% and the other group to submited to staining in Eritrosin at 0,5%. After 24 hours, the average surface roughness (Ra, mm) was measured on each specimen by a surface perfilometer (Mitutoyo surftest 211). Four tracings at different locations on each specimen were made. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the t-Student test, at a 0,05 significance level for comparisons among surface treatments and products. There were no linear correlation between average roughness (Ra) and superficial deposition of dye. Perfilometer analysis revelead that 12 and 30-bladed carbide burs had rougher surface to Chelon fi, followed by Soflex discs and Mylar band. There were no significant differences between finishing and polishing with Soflex discs and control group {Myíar band) to Vitremer material, nevertheless, the higher Ra values was obtained when 12 and 30-bladed were used. For Dyract did not show significant diference among the three treatments. The mean of superficial deposition of dye to Chelon Fil, Vitremer and Dyract were: 1.7261(a), 1.4759 (b), 1.3318 (c), respectively. There were no significant differences between restorative materials when different system of finishing and polishing were used
