RESUMO
This in situ study evaluated the erosive effect of a cola based soft drink (ERO) on human or bovine dental enamel, associated to different conditions of abrasion (immediately/NOW or mediately/1H toothbrushing). The use of chewing gum to stimulate salivary flow rate and minimize the enamel dental alterations was also studied. During two experimental 7 days crossover periods, 9 previously selected volunteers wore intraoral palatal devices, with 12 enamel specimens (6 human and 6 bovine), which were randomly selected and distributed in 3 rows, with 2 bovine and 2 human specimens each. On the first period, the volunteers immersed the device for 5 minutes in 150 mL of the soft drink, on a pre-established schedule (8h, 12h, 16h and 20h). Subsequently, 4 specimens of the row indicated row as "NOW" were brushed using a fluoride dentifrice and the device was replaced in mouth. After 1 hour, another 4 specimens of the row indicated as "1H" were brushed and no treatment was performed in the lasting row (ERO). On the second period, the procedures were repeated but after the drink immersion the volunteers stimulated the salivary flow rate by chewing a sugar-free gum for 30 minutes. Enamel alterations were measured using microhardness (%SMHC) and profilometry tests (wear-µm). ANOVA and Tukey Test showed statistical differences (p<0,05) for all following comparisons. The percentage of microhardness change was greater for the human substrate and the wear was greater for the bovine substrate. The chewing gum promoted less wear and microhardness change. It was observed a decreasing percentage of microhardness change and a crescent enamel wear in the following conditions: ERO, 1H e NOW. The data suggest that the salivary stimulation after an erosive attack can reduce the dental wear and in those situations where it is associated with abrasion by brushing, it is better to postpone this procedure by an hour.
