RESUMO

The main objective of this study was to assess the economic relevance of the nautical recreational activity developed in a multiple use water body, and its corresponding relations with the water quality. This assessment was made based on an environmental economic evaluation methodology that estimates the costs and benefits of environmental goods and services, in monetary terms, including several water uses. The results of the application of the economic evaluation methodology could contribute to decision making towards a sound water resources management. The Paranoá Lake, located in the Federal District, Brazil, was used as a case study for the evaluation of recreational activities, with a focus on its nautical use. The Lake is a multiple use reservoir and the recreational use is a priority one. Despite the fact that the water quality is good at present, there are some risks in its basin that may threaten the water quality in the future, and consequently, jeopardize its multiple uses, in special, the recreational one. Based on the economic evaluation literature, the Travel Cost Method that is recommended for the evaluation of recreational sites and activities was applied. A field survey was carried out in order to get the information required by the Travel Cost Method, and also to collect information for the general characterization of the nautical use and correlations with the water quality. The obtained results indicate that the nautical recreational activity is economically significant
