RESUMO

Microorganisms play an important role in the development of pulp and periapical lesions and along with the lack of coronal restoration, inadequate biomechanical preparations, level and quality of filling are related to the failure of endodontic treatment. The aim of this work was to analyse the factors involved with the failure followed by extraction of 58 root filled-teeth performed by specialists and undergraduate students of the Dental School of Piracicaba-UNICAMP-SP-Brasil. Some teeth were placed in individual bottles containing 10% neutral buffered formalin radiographed at different angles for evaluation of the quality of root canal filling and further for the bacteriological, microleakage and root canal morphology studies. Others were placed in individual bottles containing 2.5% glutaraldehyde solution to be investigated under scanning electron microscopic (SEM) in order to study the presence of bacteria in the dentinal tubules. The following data were recorded: age, gender, tooth, fracture, presence of coronary seal, periapical and endo-perio lesions, reabsorption, among others. Statiscally significant results (Pearson x?; p<0.05) were found between: lack of coronal seal, apical limit, endoperio lesion and microorganisms into dentinal tubules with the increase of root canal failure. It was concluded that the preservation of endodontically-treated teeth depends not only on the factors related to the endodontic technique but also on the restorative procedures and periodontal conditions, among others
