RESUMO

Urban sprawl is a major trend in contemporary urbanization, having often been associated to environmental degradation and increased public costs in urban infrastructure, especially when linking extensive land use to scarcity of natural resources and reduction of quality of life. Urban sprawl is increasingly a global phenomenon, occurring in diverse locations, with different rhythms and paths, leading to a complex spatial reality that displays new urban forms, not always developed in an efficient and balanced way. The focus of the study was directed towards one of the several aspects that involve urban sprawl the costs of water supply and sewerage infrastructure systems. The issue was initially approached by defining a few concepts which have been used in the analysis of urban sprawl, followed by an outline of the phenomenon in the United States, Europe, and Latin America in order to allow a comparison with the Brazilian case, particularly that of Distrito Federal (Federal District). Next, the impacts of urban sprawl on the natural and urban systems as well as its relationship to the costs of providing urban infrastructure are analyzed, followed by a characterization of the phenomenon in the area under investigation and a description of the sanitation infrastructure systems. Finally, the infrastructure costs of the sprawling pattern of land occupation of the Distrito Federal are measured and compared to those of the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro, Florianopolis, and Natal. In addition, a correlation between the costs and the morphological and physical factors in some urban areas of the Distrito Federal is carried out through the use of proposed indicators designed for this purpose.
