RESUMO

Health promotion programs are important to reduce the risks and dangers that a population may be exposed to, especially the child population. As part of this process, the evaluation of services helps the implementation of actions taken in these programs. The study focused on the importance of evaluating health services, enhancing the users point of view, since the actions carried out in the Basic Health Units are often imposed on a population facing needs that health professionals believe to be important. The general aim was to evaluate the Language Development and Visual Function Observation Program in Infants in the city of Mogi Mirim, from the family s perspective. Specific objectives: to understand the perceptions of mothers and caregivers about the Program and to list the positive and negative aspects. Method: Qualitative study using the focus group in two meetings, attended by eight subjects: six mothers, one grandmother and one caregiver. All participants invited to the group had come in at least two evaluations of child development. Data collection was attended by a moderator, an observer and a rapporteur. The research instruments were observation, structured interview and document analysis. Data collection began in July/2009 and data analysis used the hermeneutic method, with the following steps: ordering the data, sorting the data and final analysis. Results and Discussion: After analyzing the data, the most relevant and frequent categories in the speeches of the participants and also discussed in this study were: hospitality, health promotion, empowerment, health team, interdisciplinary work, integrality and bonding. Conclusion: The strengths listed by participants were the observation of child development through his/her own universe, resolving of all questions and comments after the observations and the speech therapist professional conducting promotion and prevention and other professionals caring for the disease. The participants did not list negative points, but they suggested more frequent follow-up visits to the doctor and that the infant s first appointment should be with the speech therapist. Regarding the Health Unit existing management, it is believed that interdisciplinary work is necessary. The Program for Observation of Language and Visual Function in Infants has proved to be important for early detection of impairments, the monitoring breastfeeding and reduction of vicious habits. For the families, the program has been helpful in clarifying questions about infant development.
