RESUMO

This study was realized to evaluate the economic and financial performance of companies in the construction industry in the years 2008 and 2009, through the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), in order to identify companies considered efficient, improvements to those not efficient and analyze issues related to traditional economic and financial indicators. This research can be classified as quantitative, as to the methodology, and descriptive in relation to their objectives. Used the DEA classic models, CCR and BCC, with orientation outputs, applied to the information on total capital and taxes and and salaries of employees - inputs -, and sales and net profits - outputs. To complement this analysis, sought to identify relationships between efficiency scores and indices of economic and financial liquidity, debt and profitability using Spearman Correlation. The sample consisted of 51 (fifty-one) companies that had information available in the database Melhores e Maiores Exame-FIPECAFI for the period studied. It was observed that 6 (six) companies were efficient for CCR Model in 2008 and 2009, in Model BCC 16 (sixteen) and 14 (fourteen) reached the efficiency index in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Stands companies Azevedo &Travassos, Engevix, Itambé Cimento and Supermix considered effective in two years by the models applied. Besides the classification of successful firms, identified the improvements needed for business is not efficient and that the relationship between the indices of efficiency and economic-financial indicators can be considered moderate, because was observe a heterogeneity of the indices of efficiency and the economic and financial indicators.
