RESUMO

The general objetive of this study was the application of the upflow anaerobic filter to the treatment of sanitary wastewater. Efficiency was verified through the utilization of the three different packing media: pall-rings, rocks, and bamboo rings. The especific objetive was to evaluate an alternative system for wastewater treatment, utilizing a low cost packing material, namely the bamboo. For this purpose three reactors were built, and fed with screened wastewater from the central area of the city of Campinas, State of São Paulo. The parameters monitored during the experiment were: 800; COO: pH; alkalinity; and suspended and total solids, both fixed and volatile. The following hydraulic detention times were used: 24, 12, 8 and 4 hours. The most important conclusion were: anaerobic filters efficiencies were in the range of 60 to 80 percent; suspended solids removal varied from 70 to 80 percent; hydraulic detention time must be greater or equal to 8 hours; and finally, the anaerobic filters packed with bamboo rings presented treatment efficiency equivalent to the results obtained with other packing materiais reactors, showing that it is a viable option to sanitary wastewater treatment
