RESUMO

Technological changes in real estate developments have been taking place across the world so as to improve their compatibility with the environment. Effluent reduction and reuse are critical issues, as they are directly related to the population’s health. However, such concern not only applies to the reduction of sewage discharge, but also to the proper system operation. The use of water for cleaning, garden watering and restrooms stands out. In that sense, a theme park – in which efforts were made to develop and implement in a streamlined manner the use of local natural resources while taking into account the sustainable development concept – has been selected as a case study. Thus, the factors that led the company to invest in the water reuse system include: the concern about the intensive use of water resources and the company’s quality and environmental policy. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to demonstrate and assess the technical feasibility of waste catchment, treatment and reuse systems as well as to put forward a proposal – technically and legally consistent with international standards – for water reuse in real estate development, while evaluating the current domestic waste treatment system of the venture under consideration and determining the water quality for the various water reuse methods. As a conclusion, the limits set by the developer have been compared with those imposed by the international law; intensive monitoring of the disinfection system and the implementation of an effective environmental management system focused on the operational control of the reuse system are recommended.
