RESUMO

The quality and functionality of a software program for automatic nurse shift scheduling was evaluated by nurses working in a hospital and professors of an undergraduate nursing course. The software was developed in the intranet format, using the Internet page model to facilitate its implementation and use. The theoretical reference used here was the Evaluation Process Model of the ISO/IEC 9126 standard, Part 1: Quality Model, which deals with the external and internal quality of software. This model classifies the quality attributes of software according to six characteristics: functionality, reliability, usability, efficiency, maintainability, and portability and their subcharacteristics. In this research, the characteristics of functionality, usability and efficiency were used to evaluate the software, and the characteristic of efficiency to evaluate the schedule it generated. This study is descriptive and exploratory. Two categories of evaluators participated as subjects of the research: nurses (9) and nursing teachers (11). The evaluation was carried out in two stages, in which the research subjects answered two instruments of evaluation, expressing their opinions about the use of the software and about the schedule it generated. Each stage was developed with the individual participation of one of the evaluators supported by the researcher. In the second stage, four evaluations were made remotely through the Internet, with the subjects accessing the software from their homes. The first evaluation of the software yielded poorer results than expected. For the characteristic of Functionality, subcharacteristic Adequateness, 56% of the nurses responded positively. In addition, 44% of the nurses agreed with the softwares characteristic of Accuracy and 78% agreed with its Usability and Efficiency. Among the nursing teachers, 50% did not answer the first evaluation and only 13% did not agree with the softwares Adequateness. The results indicated that 50% of these evaluators agreed with the softwares Accuracy, Usability and Efficiency. As for the evaluation of the schedule generated by the software, 50% of the nursing teachers did not answer this item; however, 54% of the nurses and 45% of the nursing teachers agreed with the softwares Efficiency. The second evaluation of the software and the schedule it generated was made after the corrections requested by the evaluating nurses and nursing teachers were implemented. Among the nurses, 100% agreed with its Adequateness and 78% with its Accuracy, both of which are subcharacteristics of Functionality. The results indicated that 100% agreed with the softwares characteristic of Usability and only 11% did not agree with its Efficiency. One hundred percent of the nursing teachers agreed with the softwares characteristics of Functionality, Usability and Efficiency. In this evaluation, 87% of the nurses and 98% of the nursing teachers gave positive responses regarding the Efficiency of the shift schedule generated by the software. The present study confirmed that the newly developed software meets all the needs for the automated generation of nurse shift schedules without requiring any simulations or modifications of the nursing staffs preferences.
