RESUMO

The water stain phenomenon is a typical problem in the Brazilian industry of ceramic coatings, characterized by presenting a tonality variation of the ceramic piece enamel surface, when in contact with water. The engobe is used, among other reasons, to milden the water stain phenomenon. This work aimed to study the influence of the different thicknesses of the engobe layer, as well as their characteristics, compositions and interface study (support/engobe/enamel), microstructure and crystalline phases occurring after the burning in two engobes with different starting compositions. For this purpose, the followings assays were carried out: physical characterization, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray difraction (XRD), chemical analysis, apparent density and porosity, water absorption, water stain by immersion and colorimetry, maintaining the same temperature and burning conditions. To perform this work, ceramic supports produced by a company located in Santa Gertrudes region were used, taken from the manufacture process at random, before receiving the engobe and enamel layer application. The second phase of the work was outlined with the intention of varying the phase 1 engobes composition, aiming to add better refraction materials, which could maintain the adequate glassy phase and porosity grade. In the third phase of the work, the results obtained were compared with the engobe layers microstructure, in ceramic pieces coatings industrialized with the same manufacture process, dry via and without presenting the water stain phenomenon, when submitted to the staining assay.
