RESUMO

A descriptive clinical study was carried out with women enrolled at the Family Planning Clinic, Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, UNICAMP, who chose contracetion through use of medroxiprogesterone acetate (MPA). The study was developed from September, 1976 through September, 1990. In the first phase, the efficacy of MPA was analyzed in 1401 women, as well as its effects on body weight, blood pressure and menstrual cycle characteristics. In a second phase, the characteristics of the endometrium were studied in a sub-group of 148 users who underwent endometrium biopsy. The results showed that MPA was an acceptable and highly effective contraceptive. A statistically significant increase in body weight was observed, related to time of use and initial weight. Regarding blood pressure, effects were minimal but clinically favorable. Most of the users presented alterations of the menstrual cycle; amenorrhea was the most frequent. Different degrees of endometrial atrophy were found in most of the biopsies. These results showed that with apropriate selection and orientation of users, MPA can be one more contraceptive option available to many women
