RESUMO

Cross-sectional study aiming to measure aerobic capacity, physical activity level and glycemic control of teenagers with Diabetes Mellitus type 1 and to evaluate the relationship between these variables. The sample was composed by 61 teenagers with Diabetes Mellitus type 1, 34 male (18,88 ± 2,13 years old) and 27 female (17,16 ± 2,27 years old). Aerobic capacity (VO2peak) was assessed by a maximal progressive test and the oxygen consumption was recorded by an espirometer (Biopac® Systems Inc., EUA). The participants` physical activity level has been estimated by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and the glycemic control by the Glycated Hemoglobin (A1C) dosage method. Mean VO2peak of the male teenagers (46,23 ± 7,93 mL/Kg/min) was significantly higher (p=1.480e-10) than the female teenagers (31,18 ± 6,98 mL/Kg/min). The male teenagers` physical activity level was significantly higher (p=0,02084) when compared to the female teenagers. Mean A1C found in the 61 participants was 10,25 ± 2,77 %, 5 (8,2%) individuals have shown a good glycemic control. Mean A1C in male participants was 9,35 ± 2,08 % where 4 (11,8%) have shown a good glycemic control. As for the female participants, mean A1C was 11,39 ± 3,13 % with only one participant (3,7%) with a well controlled glycemia. There was an association between VO2peak and Physical Activity Level on the male (p=0.007732) and female samples (p=0.0008446). VO2peak and A1C presented a negative association on the female sample (p=0.0002134). There was no association between Physical Activity Level and A1C. It was concluded that on the diabetic population studied on this research, the female teenagers showed lower levels of physical activity and aerobic capacity added to a worse glycemic control when compared to the male participants. Physical activity level was positively correlated to the aerobic capacity which in turn, showed a positive correlation with glycemic control on the female participants. Therefore, more studies related to physical activity such as therapeutic variability should be conducted to offer arguments to enhance the management and health care of diabetic patients.
