RESUMO
The present study was designed to compare, clinically and radigraphically, the treatment of class II mandibular molar furcation defects with guided tissue regeneration (GTR) using GUIDOR@ membranes (test group) dr open flap debridement (control group). The sample consisted of 19 furcation defects in mandibular molars, in 9 patients. In each patient, the furcation defects were randomly assigned to either the test or the control group. Six months postoperatively, both groups demonstrated probing depth (PD) reduction (control group: 2,51 mm, p=0,0021; test group: 1,61 mm, p=0,0039), and clinical attachment leveI horizontal (CAL-h) gain (control group: 1,01 mm, p=0,0372; test group 2,73 mm, p=0,OO8). The clinical attachment leveI vertical (CAL-v) gain and gingival recession(GR) were statistically significant in control group, however, were not statistically significant in test group (CAL-v: test group:0,76 mm, p=O,12; group control: 1,16. mm, p=0,0073; GR: test group: 0,85 mm, and control group: 1,24 mm). No statistically significant differences were foun~ in any ofthe clinical parameters evaluated between the test and control treatment. GTR resulted in closure of 30% of the ,sites, while none of the control sites have reached the same resulto The mean decrease in radiographic optic density in the control group was greater than test group (-13,11 ând 2,38, respectively-p=0,043). The GTR-group presented a greater area optic density gain than the control group (42.19% and 21,91%, respectively -p=O,033). Within the limits of this study, it can be concluded that the two therapies were clinically similar in the treatment of class II furcation defects in mandibular molars. GRT may provide a better chance for furcation closure than open flap debridement
