RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to compare the composition of the subgingival microbiota and the periodontal clinical parameters of smokers and non-smokers with chronic periodontitis. 50 subjects were enrolled in this study, 25 non-smokers (NS group) and 25 smokers (S group). Subjects received clinical and microbiological examination. Six sites per tooth were examined for the parameters of visible plaque index, gingival bleeding index, probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), bleeding on probing and suppuration. 6 to 12 subgingival biofilm samples were collected, per subject, from 2 to 4 sites in each of the following PD categories: shallow (PD <3mm), moderate (PD between 4 to 6 mm) and deep (PD >7 mm). The samples were evaluated for 38 bacterial species using the Checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization technique. There were no differences in mean PD and CAL between the two groups. The smokers showed a lower percent of sites with gingival bleeding (S = 9.54% + 15.31 and NS = 39.44% + 25.13, p<0.01, Mann Whitney U Test) and a higher frequency of sites with CAL >4 mm (S = 60.9% and NS = 50.4%, p<0.001, Chi-square Test). The subjects of NS group showed higher mean total counts of the bacterial species (3.2 x 107) compared to S group (2.1 x 107). Significant statistical differences were observed (p<0.05, Mann Whitney U Test) only for the total counts of S. sanguinis, A. actinomycetemcomitans and L. buccalis and to the mean percent of A. actinomycetemcomitans and L. buccalis, which were reduced in the S group. The proportions of the bacterial complexes and the mean prevalence of the species evaluated were similar between the groups. In conclusion, the results of the present study showed that there were no marked differences for both clinical and microbiological profiles between non-smoking and smoking Brazilians subjects with chronic periodontitis.
