RESUMO

The purpose of the present research was to evaluate by means of the pre- and postoperative images of the transversal sections of the coronal, middle and apical third the shape of root canal preparation. Fifty mesiobuccal root canals of human mandibular first molars were randomly divided into five groups of ten specimens. In the group 1, the root canals were instrumented by HERO 642à system; group 2: HERO 642à system associated with HERO Apicalà system; group 3: HERO Shaperà system; group 4: HERO Shaperà system associated with HERO Apicalà system and the group 5: NitiFlex filesÃ. The pre- and postoperative images of the coronal, middle and apical were taken with a stereomicroscope with a forty five magnifier, where the presence of deviations and the number of root canal walls touched were evaluated and the perimeter, wich increase was calculated by the Image Tool software. The instruments failures were also recorded. The datas of the comparisons between the morphological changes, analyses of the instrumented walls and effectiveness of the instruments were made by Fisherâs Exact test and the final perimeters of the groups were made using the Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric test. The 5% level of significance was adopted in all the tests. It was possible to conclude that an increase in perimeter was observed in all groups, there were no fractures of the instruments and that no system presented an absolute effectiveness, for each of them produced morphological changes and failed to instrument all the walls of the root canals
