RESUMO

Cerebral stroke is a disease which raises considerable concem currently due to the fact that it is the largest cause of death alI over the world, after heart disease and cancer. A great deal of researches have been carried out in several countries so that people become aware of the need to search for healthy lifestyles in order to prevent and control the risk factors related to this clinical status. Nonetheless, except for the conventional treatment performed by physiotherapists, the efforts in the area have mainly emphasized prevention, thus leaving a gap conceming the possible ways to reach an improved general quality of life for those who have had such a disease. This study is concretely aimed at showing that a regular program of physical activity may provide a new meaning for this population and also that, despite the disability, a large number of potentialities lie ahead of them. Eighteen volunteers with ischemic cerebral stroke were evaluated in terms of general quality of life, depression and anxiety. Then, they accomplished a regular program including activities in water, with horses and walking for six months. Finally, they were reevaluated on completion of the program by using the initial instruments again and the data obtained were statistically compared. It is the purpose of this study to demonstrate that the program itself made a significant improvement possible in alI evaluated aspects, that is, minimization of the depression process, marked decrease in state anxiety and improvement in general quality of life. Hence, we may conclude that when a program like this one is developed and committed to joy, pleasure and personal interests, being compatible with the limitations and potentialities of this population, it may not only bring physiological benefits by avoiding recurrence in this clinical picture but also influence the individual emotional aspects. These benefits provide a higher leveI of self confidence, autonomy and independence
