RESUMO

To evaluate whether the addition ofbismuth subnitrate to a dual oral therapy (DOT) regimen with omeprazole plus amoxicillin could improveHelicobacter pylori eradication. Fifty consecutive Helicobacter pylori positive patients were randomly enrolled to receive either (A) bismuth subnitrate (300 mg q.i.d.), omeprazole (20 mg q.i.d.) and amoxicillin (500 mg q.i.d.), or (B) omeprazole (20 mg q.i.d.) and amoxicillin (500 mg q.i.d.). Both groups (n=25 each) received the medication for 2 weeks. Helicobacter pylori status was reassessed 30 days following completion of the therapy in order Six patients were lost to follow up and therefore exc1eded from the study (3 patients from each group). One patient from Group B withdrew the study because of side effects. Ther addition of bismuth subnitrate to on1eprazole and amoxicillin significantly improved its efficacy in to evaluate eradication rates. eradicating Helicobacter pylori, with 72% (18/25) eradication in group A and 52% (13/25) ingroup B (p=0.027). The addition ofbismuth subnitrate to DOT was also capable of improving the healing of peptic. ulcers when compared with DOT alone (100%,8/8 vs. 58%,4/7; p=0.02l). Our results demonstrate that the association of bismuth subnitrate to DOT enhances Helicobacter pylori eradication, and improves healing of peptic ulcers
